WOW I am so glad I found this site. Some great advice from you guys. . . So I thought I would add my plans thus far. After 6 days in Spain our first Italian stop is Chinque Terre. Two days enough? Hostel advice? We then wanted to spend three days in the Tuscany area friend recommended we rent a car from Florence? Next we move to Rome for two or three days? Any advice. Timetable Okay?
We are traveling in the beginning of October - and this is our first time to Europe.
I don't think you really need a car to do Tuscany, certainly not for only three days.
Once you're done with Cinque Terre, I'd hop a train to Pisa and change for Florence (Firenza.) No need to stop in Pisa, unless you want to see the tower. Stay in Florence one or two nights, then head to one hill town. If it were me, I'd do Orvieto, not Siena. More interesting, a little less touristy. Then train down to Roma.
