Italy Honeymoon Itinerary - Suggestions?

Hello everyone! My fiance and I are currently planning our honeymoon to Italy in October for 8 nights. We are really interested in getting a feel for the Italian culture while also enjoying the coastline during our honeymoon. We aren't huge museum people but really love to see the architecture and scenery. We are currently planning on flying into Rome but have not booked any flights. Our tentative itinerary is as follows:

Day 1: Land in Rome around 1pm. Travel by train to Sorrento. Check in to hotel in Sorrento.
Day 2: Explore Sorrento and bus tour of the Amalfi Coast
Day 3: Day trip to one of the towns of the Amalfi Coast - possibly Positano?
Day 4: Day trip to Capri or one of the other islands nearby.
Day 5: Day trip to Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius
Day 6: Travel from Sorrento to Rome via morning train. Check in to hotel in Rome. Explore Vatican City.
Day 7: Day trip to Orvieto
Day 8: Explore Rome - Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, etc.
Day 9: Fly out from Rome

Would you recommend that we start in Rome rather than finish in Rome? Also, should Sorrento be our base when exploring the Amalfi Coast/Pompeii or should we stay in Naples instead? We have considered traveling to Naples via train upon arriving in Rome and then traveling to Sorrento the morning of day 2. We are totally open to any suggestions. We are currently just trying to plan out our locations for each day. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Congratulations on your engagement! You have a good start and I will add a few suggestions. First, fly into Naples rather than Rome. This will make it much easier to get to Sorrento on the first day. You can arrange private transport from the airport to Sorrento as a special treat. I think Sorrento is a great place to base for the AC. On Day 2, do you have a bus tour planned? I would consider just exploring Sorrento especially with a day trip to Positano on day 3 (avoids possible duplication). Fly home from Rome. We spent our honeymoon in Italy as well. My biggest piece of advice is this: make sure you have time to relax and enjoy yourselves! Don't try to cram everything in; plan on a return trip one day! Enjoy the vino!

I like Orvieto a lot, but I wouldn't commit to spending that day away from Rome at this point. Wait and make a decision after you've spent part of Day 6 in Rome. 2-1/2 days in Rome is a very short time for such an important city.

I wouldn't want to spend so much time near Amalfi and not actually see the Amalfi Coast (including Ravello), so I tend to agree with your orginal plan for Days 1 - 3. With luck you'll have enough energy on Day 1 to accomplish some of your Sorrento sightseeing that day.

We always travel to our furthest destination on the day that we arrive, so yes I would recommend traveling to Sorrento on your day of arrival.

Definitely stay in Sorrento over Naples, but as another poster commented I would also stay on the Amalfi Coast side. We prefer Ravello. It's a gorgeous hilltop town with incredible views.
