Italy Honeymoon in Sept 2022 - 15 nights - Como, Dolomites,...and??

Hello everyone! My fiance and I are getting married in June and planning a honeymoon to Italy in early September 2022. We are anticipating 15 nights total, and have decided on the first part of our itinerary, below. We are struggling with the second half of the trip and looking for suggestions:

  • Fly into Milan
  • 3 nights on Lake Como
  • 4 nights in Dolomites
  • 8 nights in ???
  • Fly out of ???

Having both been to some of the major cities before (albeit many years ago) such as Florence, Milan, Rome, we are looking to experience a little bit of the slower pace and smaller towns/cities. We do not enjoy visiting museums/churches/sightseeing for pictures, but want to experience Italy more like locals: walk, bike, hike, eat good food, perhaps take a cooking class, etc., combining our active lifestyle with some R&R.

With only 8 nights post-Dolomites, distance and travel is a concern, as we don't want to waste more than we need to in transit, likely having a maximum of 2 more destinations as bases for the rest of the trip. Ideally, there would be someplace along the coast, but that isn't a requirement. We had initially thought of the Amalfi Coast area as an option, but seeing as that would eat up at least a day to get there, that may be best left for a future trip. Perhaps CT is good alternative.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

The closest airport to the Dolomites is Innsbruck, AT (INN) and the closest airport to the Cinque Terre is Pisa followed by Genoa. If neither airport works then stay in Monterosso on the riviera since there’s a direct train between Monterosso and Milan’s Central station (3h). Lake Como is smack in the middle of the Dolomites and the Cinque Terre.

First, add more nights to Lake Como and the Dolomites. Add Venice and maybe another town or small city in the Veneto. Lake Garda too.
We drove to the Dolomites via west side of Lake Garda spending a night in lovely Salò and returned via east side of lake staying at Malcesine which has a nice beach.
We have spent a lot of time on Lake Como too and love it. Four trips there, once for two weeks. MXP is very near Lake Maggiore. Lots of places to visit in the north. In Liguria, we prefer Santa Margherita Ligure and Camogli to the Cinque Terre as it’s gotten so crowded. If you do go to the CT, stay at Hotel Porta Roca, on a bluff with spectacular water views and great dining too.

While the closest airport to the Dolomites may be Venice, keep in mind that any flight from there will need to be connecting with another airport on the way back home. This means your flight will leave early in the morning, and this can be difficult to do because transportation from Venice to the airport, which is in Mestre, can be problematic.

If you haven't been to Venice it's worth a few nights. So is Rovinj, Croatia while also visiting some nearby hill towns.

Innsbruck Airport to Bolzano / Bozen is 122 km. From Venice Marco Polo Airport it’s 221 km. From Milan’s Malpensa Airport it’s 319 km.
You can take a bus from Innsbruck Airport into IT and transfer in Chiusa, IT (2h). From Chiusa it’s another 30-minutes to Bolzano.

You may wish to insert Verona for one or two nights before the Dolomites because getting all the way from Lake Como to the Dolomites is going to subsume a full day of travel. Take a look at Vicenza and Padova in that region. Also to double back from the Dolomites to the CT is another long haul. Good Luck!

A lot of good ideas, thank you. Sounds like it may be worthwhile to perhaps reverse the itinerary here and fly into Venice, and spend some time in that region before heading up to the Dolomites.

Unsure whether the hustle and bustle of Venice is something we would enjoy.

Is Lake Garda difference enough of an experience from Lake Como to stop for a couple nights?

First of all, by train going from Trento to Naples takes about 6 hours, so Amalfi or Sorrento coasts aren't so far as you think. Naples itself deserves some days.
In the northern part of the Dolomites you can do the easy bikeway San Candido - Lienz. Very easy path!
Reading your itinerary a nice idea is even stay in the north. After Dolomites area you can move to Garda's lake / Verona, with a lot of itineraries to explore the towns and villages nearby. From Peschiera starts the "Ciclovia del Mincio" who lead to Mantua: an easy and very nice bikeway in the flat countryside. Is even part of the "Eurovelo #7", a bikeway who connect Norway to Sicily. This bikeway of course continue southward to Modena, Bologna, Florence and so on.
Emilia-Romagna is another area where you can find a lot of things to do. Is one of the most developed for bike tourism, for example. Here you can find some more details about it: www.piste-ciclabili.com/regione-emilia_romagna . This is another list for the most scenic bikeways: https://emiliaromagnaturismo.it/it/natura-outdoor/ciclovie-dei-parchi (even if some are for well trained bikers!).
For Food Emilia-Romagna is one of the best destination in Italy, with a lot of activities for foodies. Here you can find a list of the traditional foods (but only the ones protected by European Union!): https://agricoltura.regione.emilia-romagna.it/dop-igp/temi/prodotti-dop-e-igp-dellemilia-romagna-1/elenco-prodotti-dop-e-igp-dellemilia-romagna and here some ideas about activities: https://emiliaromagnatours.it/
