Italy Honeymoon

We will be traveling to Italy in October for our honeymoon. We have our itinerary set (see below), flights booked and most our our lodging arranged. The only thing I'm questioning is our one night in Volterra. My question is...are we better off staying four nights in Montepulciano? I've heard great things about Volterra and thought it would break up the drive from La Spezia. However, now I'm thinking four nights in Montepulciano might be a little more relaxing. Any thoughts? Is there enough to do in Montepulciano for four nights? Are we better off just stopping in Volterra for the day, on our way to Montepulciano?

Fly into Venice (2 nights)
Cinque Terre (3 nights)
Volterra (1 night)
Montepulciano (3 nights)
Positano (3 nights)
Rome (1 night, flying home)

Unless you have been to Rome before, I think you are making a big mistake. I would add one night in Venice, I would drop one night in the CT, drop one night in Montepulciano, drop Volterra and drop one night in Positano...spend those nights in Rome and you will have it just about right!

Ciao!

I agee with Bill....unless you've been there before, I think it would be a mistake to bypass the cradle of our civilization! You'll be bored silly spending even 3 nights in Montepulciano.

There is not much to do in Montepulciano so 4 nights (even 3 nights) sounds like too much, unless you want to use it as a springboard to visit other Tuscan hilltowns. Montepulciano is a very small place ! I agree with the others that you should add more time in Rome, it is such a fabulous place it would be a shame to skip it ! Happy honeymoon...

Thank you for the replies. Yes, we have already done Rome and Florence. We are planning to do avoid the cities (aside from Venice) and explore the quiet towns and villages for our honeymoon. Is Volterra worth a night stay? Yes, we plan to use Montepulciano as our base for exploring Tuscany.

That makes sense! My opinion would be yes, Volterra is worth a night's stay. It is a litle out of the way to get to and it would defniitely break up your drive. Then, once you're there, it would be really nice to have a little extra time to enjoy it before moving on to Montepulciano for your visits to all the other hilltowns. Sigh, it sounds wonderful !
