Italy from Hungary

I'm planning to travel to Gallipoli, Italy from Budapest with 10-20 people in the first 2 weeks of August, 2015. We'll travel from Budapest to Rome by train. We might stay in Rome for 2 days. I don't know how to travel from Rome to Gallipoli. I think travelling by train would be ok (Rome to Lecce and then maybe by bus to Gallipoli) but I don't know that area and I'm not sure in it. Are there any buses from Rome direct to Gallipoli? It would be the best to travel there without changes. We are all students so it would be great if we could get a discount and save money. I checked trenitalia but I don't find any prices because I think it's too early.

And what facilities are there for making small trips to other cities in Puglia (Otranto, Lecce, Alberobello etc.) from Gallipoli? I thougt about making a bicycle tour, too. Is that safe?

Can someone help me please? I'd be so grateful for every helpful answers. Thank you!

You can check your transportation options between Rome and Gallipoli on http://www.rome2rio.com/. It looks like the train is a bit faster than the bus options, with only one change. It's a long haul either way. Also, are you sure you want to take a train from Budapest to Rome? How many days are you going to take to do this? It looks like you can fly between the two in a lot less time and with budget airlines it may even be cheaper than the train.

On the rome2rio website you can check options for trips to other cities from Gallipoli and see how to travel and get a rough idea of how long it would take. Then you can check the transportion websites to find the costs.

FSE (Ferrovie sud est) is a railway regional network for Puglia. They cover most of the surroundings of Lecce, but their Bari to Lecce route is circuitous. So you should better travel from Bari to Lecce on Trenitalia through Brindisi, and switch in Lecce to FSE trains to Gallipoli.

Otranto has a small FSE station on a side line with sparse service, you can get there from Gallipoli, but it is a bit long. The station in Otranto is somewhat distant from the town; the walk is downhill arriving and uphill going back.

Alberobello, again, is on the FSE network but the train is so slow that I do not think you can make a day trip from Gallipoli. It is easier visited from Bari.
