Italy from Christmas to NYE

We are traveling to visit our son who is finishing a semester in Bologna. The forum has been great for us in the past and I hope you can help as we fine-tune our plans! We are flying in and out of Rome and upon arrival, will stay for two nights in Rome to get over the jet lag and then head to Bologna on Christmas Eve. We will likely travel by train (although will also consider a car). FIRST QUESTION: does anyone have a good spot for a meal on Christmas in or near Bologna? Doesn't need to be fancy, just good, authentic dining. SECOND QUESTION: are there 1-2 "not to miss" places within a short trip from Bologna? (Note: while we may travel to Florence, it's not essential on this trip, having been there two other times). THIRD QUESTION: We have family in Calabria (45 mins from Naples) and may devote a short segment of our trip to see them and stay in Naples. We've stopped in Naples a couple of times in the past but would like to see some of the city (IF we end up there). Has anyone here hired a good private tour/driver in Naples that you can recommend? LAST QUESTION: Does anyone have a good hotel close to the airport in Rome you can recommend? I know this should be open-jaw if we do the Naples leg (which is pretty unlikely), but the price was insane. Thank you in advance for reading this long post!

Re: 2nd question - Highly recommend Ravenna, for the 5th-6th century Byzantine mosaics.

Second question: Parma, Modena, Ravenna . Or stay put in wonderful Bologna!
At FCO, we stay at the Hilton by the airport. There is a restaurant and also a bar with food. But you feel like you are back in the USA.

Totally agree with side trips to Parma and Ravenna. I actually thought the meals I had in Parma were better than those at recommended restaurants in Bologna.

Any of the above mentioned side trips are available by train and Bologna is a rail hub. Trains will get you to center city with no worries about the no drive ZTL zones.

You don’t have enough time to visit Naples. Driving or train from Bologna is 5 hours +. And then there’s getting back to FCO.
