Italy/France/Austria/Switzerland Question

Hello,

I'm looking to travel to Europe for the second time next year and am unsure as to the best route (start/end) and best cities to visit. I'm hoping someone can give a suggestion on both of these items.

My initial plan is to start the trip somewhere, spending approximately 1 week traveling through various cities. Then I will do a Mediterranean Cruise for 7 days that is R/T Venice. After that I would have approximately 4-5 more days to continue traveling through Italy.

My hope is to spend time in the Cinque Terre (3 days), Venice (2 days), Lake Como region (2-3 days), 7 nights on the cruise, adn the remaining 5-7 days in some combo of mountain towns in Austria/Switzerland. If time permits, either Paris or Tuscany would be cool, but is not necessary.

So, if anyone has tips on:

  1. Cities to visit within these parameters (including order)
  2. Tips on whether or not to take a plane or train between destinations

Thanks!

How about this:
Fly into Vienna, spend 3 nights
Train to Salzburg - 2 nights,
Train to Venice - 3 nights
Cruise,
Train to Verona
Train to Milan or Lakes region (Varenna on Como)
Depart for home from Milan

The 5 Terre is a bit out of your way and may not fit on this trip. However, a different itinerary might allow it.
