Italy for 5 days- Pompiie, Amalfi, Positano, Rome, Florence

Hello, I shall be traveling in the month of March! I am arriving Naples on the morning (8:30am) of 31st March 2019. given below is the itenery!

31 March,2019 -Naples- Pompiie
Pompiie Amalfi (stay in the hostel in Furore).
1stApril,2019 - Amalfie - Positano?
Positano ,Capri, (stay in a hostel which is 5 mints away from Sorrento station)

2nd morning - leave for Rome( stay in Rome)
3rd - Rome( stay in Rome)
4th- leave for Florence (stay in Florence)
5th - full day in Florence and then flight at 8:30 for Paris!

dear reader,
May I ask you few questions to help me plan,

1-bookimgs of the hostel has been done! Do I have to make the local bookings too? For eg. The bus booking from
Naples to pompiie?
Pompiie to Amalfi Coast?
Amalfi Coast to Positano ?
Positano - Capri? ( By a ferry)
Capri - Positano/ sorrento? ( Ferry I believe)
Positano - Sorrento? (Sita bus may be)
Sorrento - Rome?

2- what are the best means( bus /train) of travel for the above places? I would be great full if you could mention specifically in front of these locations!
When do I do the bookings?

3- Do we have a Pass for the travel in Italy?

Thanking you in advance!

regards,
sonal

Seriously, you need to stop moving and enjoy one of these places.

Five days for all this! Suggest that you eliminate some locations, but you appear to have already acquitted your airline tickets.

There is a train that goes from Naples to Pompeii.
You can easily find it on the internet.

The Amalfi Coast is a bit harder to get to, not familiar with any public busses, but you either take a tour or rent a car.
Don't recommend renting a car due to lack of parking.

You can take the ferry from Sorrento to Capri.
On to Rome and Florence, suggest the train.

Pompeii takes a minimum of 2-2.5 hours to see well. The traffic is heavy going to the Amalfi Coast and it moves slowly. You may not get to see everything you wish.

You will spend most of your time in transit between cities. You will have very little time to see anything and you will likely be exhausted. If you are flying from the States to Naples, you may be too jet-lagged the first day to go to Pompeii. Have you checked the ferry schedules to see if they run in march?

If you do not have a guide book, you should get one. It likely will give you some insight into how impractical your itinerary is.

Your schedule is akin to swallowing the contents of a 2 liter bottle in one chug.

Is your plan for Paris/France as ( unrealistically) ambitious as your whirl through Italy?

You will have been to lots of places , but not really seen ( or enjoyed) much .

Even with an instant teleportation device to get from place to place, your schedule is daunting.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I don't think you understand how time consuming it is to travel the Amalfi Coast.
Are you arriving by air or train?
If by air, you will need to take the Alibus to the Napoli Central station. It runs every 30 minutes, cost is €5.

If by rail, you will go downstairs to this train, the Circumvesuvian. Timetable here.
https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule

Exit would be the Pompeii Scavi stop. A minimum time for this site is 2 hours.

Leaving Pompeii take the same train to Sorrento. With the limited time you have, stay here for both nights.

Bus schedule
https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/sorrento-to-positano-bus-schedule

The next day you want to see Positano,Amalfi and Capri, this is totally impossible. Choose either Capri or the 2 villages.

Ferry schedules.
https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/ferry-schedule
If you want to do both, you're going to have to add a night.
Which then eliminates either Rome or Florence.

Not trying to be mean, just trying for you to see the reality of the time involved.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I don't think you understand how time
consuming it is to travel the Amalfi Coast.

Just echoing Gerri's wise advice here. You cannot do this many destinations ANY sort of justice in 5 days. The Amalfi Coast, as she has pointed out, is a time-consuming region to get around. You are also cutting Rome and Florence VERY short so I wouldn't even try to do this itinerary in the little time you have to give it.

Are your flights to Naples and out of Florence already booked?

As others have pointed out your plan is extremely impractical. Are you traveling alone? Are your flights already booked?
What is the purpose- other than to say "been there/done that" and spend a lot of time getting to all these locations- but no time actually enjoying or even seeing what is to be seen.

Looks like you have 6 nights?
I'd drop Amalfi/Positano and Capri.
Stay in Naples 2 nights- visit Pompeii from there on 2nd day.
Train to Rome- 2 nights then train to Florence for 2 nights. (Or maybe just 1 night Florence if yo get there early you have that day and part of next day before pm flight)

Still nowhere near an ideal trip but certainly more doable and possibly more enjoyable

Looking more closely at the time you have, and the bus schedules for Sunday's, I'm going to suggest this itinerary. It will however shorten your time in Rome.

march 31. Travel to Sorrento buy a 24 hour bus pass it's either €10 or 12 ask. Bus (H&G schedules) the Amalfi Coast. Sleep Furore.

April 1. Bus to Sorrento, take the 9:25-9:55 ferry to Capri. Return to Sorrento on the 17:40 ferry.
Sleep Sorrento.

April 2. 8:30 Circumvesuvian to Pompeii. Gates open at 9:00. Allow enough time to return to the station and take the 12:37-13:14 train to Napoli.

Napoli centrale-Roma Termini 14:00-15:10.
This should give you enough time to visit one site and have a leisurely walk around Rome.

April 3. Rome.

April 4. Train Roma Termini-Firenze SMN.

April 5. Florence. 8:30PM flight to Paris.

If you are flying into Naples, here's the Alibus timetable.

Hello guys

Thank you so much for all your replies!

I understand very well that doing all these places together is not possible! But my bad! I forgot to add the line that I am ready to skip places but which amongst these I am not sure.

Anyways,
I guess post all your replies I come down to this plan

31st - arrive Naples @8:30. Arrive pompiie around 11:30/12 using Alibaba bus and further a train to Pompiie Scarvi! Spend time untill 3:30 /4.
Further take the train to Salerno ( shorter time duration than Sorrento) then take a local SITA bus (local bus) to Amalfi. I shall find a hostel (any inputs for 3k budget per night?) in Amalfi near the coast and the town which will make it easy for me to look for the places around next morning!

1st - morning I shall visit the coast and cathedrals (you can suggest anything that shouldn't be missed in Amalfi) untill afternoon. Post lunch around 1:30/2 leave for Positano using local bus if any ( that takes around 50m).

Enjoy the evening in Positano spend time just on the beach- you can suggest if there is anything else)! And take a bus around 7-7:30 and arrive in Sorrento ( sleep there just so that it becomes easy to catch a train / bus for Rome next morning.

I can skip Capri since that is time consuming! And when I talk about Sorrento/ Salerno,I would not want to visit the city. I choose these places cz they are the hub places and are easy for the travel.

Any suggestions are welcome and I would be greatful if you could help me make it more concrete! :)

Thanks in advance.

As for Sorrento I have booked a hostel just 500m from the town!

In case any changes in plan the bookings can definitely be cancelled.

As for stay near Amalfi, I had booked one in Furore because it was cheap! This can also be cancelled in case I have a better option having a view facing the ocean!

If you only have five days, I hope you like train stations and bus stations and roads, as that's pretty much all you will be seeing.
Why not pick one place, settle in, and really enjoy it?
You can always return another time!

Sonal, just so you're clear, the train that goes from Naples to Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station is a DIFFERENT train that you would use to go to Salerno. The Circumvesuviana train to Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri - right across from main Porta Marina entrance to the excavation - does not go to Salerno: it terminates in Sorrento. Trains that go to Salerno leave from a completely different station in the town of Pompei. That station is 1/2 mile or so walk from the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance to the excavation, which would be the closest entrance if taking a train onward Salerno. That station is marked "Pompei' on the Piazza Anfiteatro/piazza Immacolata map linked below.

Having to arrive and leave by different entrances would be an issue if you're required to check a large or bulky backpack: you'd end up doing a lot of backtracking. If you're going on to Salerno, I'd skip the train to Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri/Sorrento altogether and take the train from Naples to the station which would also be nearest your departure point: Pompei.

I often see itineraries proposed by people on tight budgets that involve a lot of travel from place to place. Keep in mind that the travel costs can add up.

From where are you arriving? The morning train from Rome or a 10 hr or more overnight flight from somewhere?

If the latter, your 1st day activity is extraordinarily ambitious.

Hello,

Thank you again for your responses!
Hi Kathy,

I did note that these are two completely different stations. Sounds good I shall look for a train that goes to Pompiie and not Pompiie Scavi.

I enjoy the AmaIfi Coast in June but I am wondering how fun it will be in March. Cool, some rain and short days. Rome and Florence are truly worthy of more time and have great indoor activities. The museum in Naples is excellent in combination with a visit to Pompeii. Have fun

You say you plan to stop in Positano on your way from Amalfi to Sorrento. Have you thought about what to do with your luggage during the stop in Positano? I'm not aware of any luggage storage in Positano, and the town's hilly streets aren't friendly to roller bags and such.

How about staying in Sorrento for both the days and then making it a one day trip to Positano and Amalfi ?

This way I don't have to Worry about the luggage!

If you're asking about just staying in Sorrento, that's definitely what I'd do if having only 2 nights, trying to do Pompei en route from Naples on arrival day, and having to return to Rome on your 2nd morning. Trying to do Amalfi and Positano en route to Sorrento from Salerno with your luggage would be a real pain.

3k of what currency?

Your helter-skelter plans have left some of us panting trying to keep up and figure out just what your latest 'plan' is.

I suggest staying in Sorrento and using it as your base for the region, doing day trip to Pompeii from there. It also gives you a base to use to tour the Amalfi Coast/Positano
If you choose to do Pompeii on your flight arrival day, I think Sorrento is easier to reach from Pompeii than Salerno. You just continue on the Circumvesuviana train. No change of trains needed to reach Sorrento

sorrento has one of the best views of the bay of naples...cliffs down to the sea...just beautiful. Then enjoy the best food in Italy...period!

mtvaughn, it's worth mention that the OP has only allowed 2 nights and one FULL day for this region. As it stands, the plan is to do Pompei on the way to Salerno or Sorrento from the airport (most of us are voting for Sorrento). Then the next day - the only full day - will be exploring some of the coast. Return to Rome is the next morning.

The full itinerary is anything but "chill"!

Hello guys,
Thank you for writing back.
Yes Joe, like I mentioned in my last post! I shall be taking Sorrento as my base. Arriving from Naples I shall do Pompiie the first day. Go down to Sorrento take a stay there.

Next day do Positano/ Amalfi get back to Sorrento in the night and leave for Rome next morning!

This I think is very much doable considering the frequency and availability of Sita bus!

Regards,
Sonal

Ooh, Laurel, you probably know this...
I always want to spell it as it is for the train station (Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri), and even coopculture spells it both with one "i" and two. Do you know when you're supposed to use one or the other?
