Italy for 5 Day - Milan first 2 then where?

My husband, two teenage sons and myself are flying to Milan on April 5th. We are locked in to staying in Milan for 6th and 7th. I would love to visit Florence but my question is - is it doable since we have to fly home on the Sunday evening. If not, any other suggestion as to where to visit. Also, train information websites and any accommodation recommendations for a family.
Thank you.

Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station is a couple of hours from Milano Centrale, so you could spend two nights inFirsnze and get back to Milano for your last night before flying back. Another option would be Venezia.

It really depends on the experiences you are looking for. as mentioned previously, two great ideas. but different places to visit. are you after beautiful lake/mountain scenery and interesting small towns and villas to visit eg: villa balbianello on lake como, OR the interesting city of Florence, with all it has to see?

Hi Deirdre. For train info, see trenitalia.com. Pick the day from the calendar and put in 06 for the hour to see all the trains for the day. Use Italian station names such as Milano Centrale, Firenze SMN. You will see there are many trains a day to Florence getting you there in 1 hour 40 min, Verona 1 hour 23 min, and Venice (Venezia SL) 2 hours 35 min. The 'base' fare is what you will pay if you wait and buy tix in Italy at your convenience, and these trains have huge capacity, rarely sell out. Enjoy your trip!

You don't really have very long. If the 8th is a travel day out of Milan and the 10th is a travel day back to Milan, you really only have the 9th. Is this your first trip to Italy? I'd go to Venice, I guess. Even if you're not there long enough to see a lot of sights, you'll just get to experience the magic of it all.
