Italy Entry Requirements, Visa & Financial Statements

Visiting Italy for 20 days and need to know if I need to get a visa and a health insurance?
Also do I need to show financial statements? If yes which ones?

Thanks!

If you're a US or Canadian citizen all you need is your passport for stays less than 90 days. If you travel under another passport (other than EU) you'll have to check your government website to see if you need a visa or other documents.

Financial statements? Really? Where is THAT required for a vacation?

Sounds like perhaps you're not from the US so check your local laws carefully.

In another post you mention flying from Dallas. Are you a US citizen? If so, there is no need for anything but a passport. Do you really think the Italians would make it that hard for American tourists? That said, it sounds like you are getting info from some shady resources. Check the Italian Embassy website in DC for official info.

"check your government website" "check your local laws" - Rubbish
It is nothing to do with the laws of the country you are coming from, It is Italian laws (and the Schengen treaty agreement rules) which decides whether you need a visa or not. And the Schengen countries collectively decide who they let in with or without a visa based on your nationality.

See this map: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Schengen_visa_requirements.png
for a list of which countries nationals do and do not require a visa. But, that is only a map on the internet, to get the definitive rules, check with your local Italian consulate. It is not where you live that decides if you need a visa, it is your nationality.

Until we know what passport the OP holds no one can give a correct answer.

Then all you need is a passport...with at least 6 months left on it before its expiration date.

You don't need either one. Just keep in mind that Medicare will not cover you overseas if you are on it.

As you're travelling with a U.S. Passport, you won't need a separate Visa. It is absolutely a good idea to have health insurance. I don't know what kind of insurance is available in your area, but I'm sure one of the other members of the group can help with that.

I've never heard of anyone needing financial statements for short visits as a tourist. Whoever told you that apparently hasn't visited Italy before.

Be sure to notify all your credit / debit card issuers that you'll be travelling overseas so they don't "freeze" your cards when they detect foreign transaction activity.

It is not clear if this is your first visit to Europe. If you have spent more than 90 days in the Schengen area within the 180 days prior to your arrival in Italy, then yes you will need a Visa and may need some of the others you mention.

So, is this your first trip?

US tourists need only a US passport with at least I think 3 months' validity (6 months recommended).

Financial statements would be needed only if you are applying for a resident visa. You would do that at the Italian consulate in the US not at the border. So unless you plan to move to Italy, you can keep your bank statements at home.

If your health insurance does not cover outside the US check Travel Guard for a short term travelers' insurance.

If you are a member of AAA or AARP, check for travel insurance that covers emergency situations. Be sure you take an adequate supply of prescription and over the counter medication and supplements. If you are going to be in the Schengen for more than 90 days within 180, send me a private message as I did receive a long term stay visa and the process is not as simple as you may think. I'm in Month 7 of my "first" one year visa. Hoping to receive my first two year extension! Ciao! Catherine
