italy end of may no reservations ?

Going to fly into Rome may 22 for two weeks out of Florance
renting a car and letting the trip unfold , is this crazy is it going to be hard to find hotels or b&bs along the way.

Thanks Gina

I have let the trip unfold on my last two excursions to Italy (May 05 and May 08). Both trips were 4 weeks and I had no problems with accomodations. I take Rick's guidebook and the Lonley Planet and look for the recommended B&B's. I like to book the first night of the trip in advance so I don't have to do it when I am tired from the flight.

I've traveled in Italy somewhat off-season (Sept) a few times w/o reservations and so I know it can be done. However a fair amount of time is consumed each time you change places because you need to find new lodging. I think it works better if you go someplace and use it as a base for 2+ days to explore the region until you feel like moving on. Of course if after a day if you want to leave then do so, but I wouldn't suggest traveling with the idea that you're going to be finding a new place every nite.

Also as far as "letting the trip unfold" that can mean different things to different people. When we went we had some ideas in mind of places to see and things to do, but the dates were flexible. And if we met someone with a suggestion of a place to go we were open to that. But that's different than just landing in Italy and saying "ok, what now?"

I will do this often, but the key is to still plan. For a potential stop, have several options that you have looked into and would be comfortable with. As someone mentioned, check out Lonely Planet, Frommers, and Lets Go in addition to RS for a good array of choices from ultra cheap to whatever you are comfortable with. I usually only then follow up on the web and see if they have a site or what more information I can gather. If I were making the trip, I would still probably lock in known dates for Rome, maybe Florence if you will be there to stay. It does seem that Rome can be difficult at any time of year. If you find a small town you like, but have no info, do not be afraid to ask at a local bar or cafe, you would be amazed at how many hidden rooms are available in some places that never advertise.

With the economy the way it is this may be possible, but do remember May is high season now as far as travel goes. If you are going to the Cinque Terre at the end of May you might have a problem.

Another point to make is that another strategy I use is to call ahead, either the same day or maybe the day before to check on room availability. While I may not have a firm schedule 3-7 days out, I usually have a pretty good idea of where I will be that night or the next day.

There are many things you need to decide prior to your trip. What do you want to see in Florance?
Do you like museums? I have both the Travel with Rick Steves and DK Eyewitness Travel Guide for Italy
I have poured through both books and made an Iternary of what I would most like to see and distances between. I have been to Italy 5 times in the past couple of years and will be going again next year. There is just so much to see and do.

Ive done it both ways.I prefer to have reservations in advance. That way I get the best places at a good price and in addition I dont waste time looking.
