Italy - early July versus last August?

Hi!
I booked a 11 day trip to Italy (via Milan) for the first week of July. But all of a sudden a fare that's about half of the one I got popped up for the last week of August/first week of September.

I'm torn. On the one hand, we would save more than $1,000 by going at the end of August. On the other hand, this is a trip of a lifetime and I've heard August is the worst month to go to Italy. So if there's a significant difference between early July and late August, I would pay the extra money to go in July. But if there's not..... well, then we'd switch the fares.

If it makes any difference, we have 2 kids (ages 3 and 9) and were planning on splitting our time between Tuscany countryside (with day trips to Florence and Siena, etc...) and a resort area in the north (one of the lakes or the Ligurian coast).
Thanks for any input! Will need to make the change tonight if I do !

I'm always into low airfares, and go for the cheaper fares. And the end of August would be preferable, as Italy's just so hot in the middle of the Summer.
If you're going to be flying into Milan, Lake Como area is about an hour north of Milan, and it's right on the Swiss border. The area is abxolutely stunning in beauty.
The other popular lake region in Northern Italy would be Lake Garda--just west of Verona.
Have a great family vacation.

To go either time in summer will be similiar. I have spent the last 15 yrs in europe including Italy during the summer the crowds are similiar. Save some money but make sure u have reserved your lodging and any major museum
Entry tix. Enjoy.

I don't see why August would be the worst month to go.
There isn't much difference in terms of crowds or weather between the two periods.

If you're worried about heat, we generally have gone to Italy mid-Sept to early Oct. In 2014, we went the first two weeks of Sept (Amalfi/Rome//Venice)...most days consisted of going out early then going back to the room in the afternoon for a few hours to siesta as it was still really hot (Venice was a bit cooler by the time we got there in mid-Sept). I don't think you'll find much difference heat wise between July and late Aug (but I've never been there in July - if it's worse than early Sept, I'd be a puddle on the ground).

Personally, I'd go with the cheaper fare, and use the savings to pay for hotels or preferred accoms that include AC, and also - buying lots of gelato. :)

I don't see how you can keep changing your mind about when you travel and I didn't know it was possible for an airplane ticket to be a thousand dollars less on one date instead of another date.

The way my schedule works is, If I want to take a trip, I request the time off from my supervisor at work, after she says it is ok, I book my trip, then I assume I won't change my mind about when I travel and I don't check whether another date will be cheaper. If I were to change my travel date now, for example, then I would have to try rescheduling my hostels and two group tours I already reserved. There seems to be only one flight leaving from Detroit each day going to anywhere in Italy; the flight is by Delta and only lands in Rome; I paid just under $1,602, which included the insurance offered on the Delta website. I am traveling in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of July, for random or irrational reasons or because late December seems like a bad time to travel and I want the maximum amount of daylight each day and my trip is just after my anniversary at work after my ability to take time off starts.

I'm buying four tickets so it's pretty easy to get a $1,000 savings! And I live in New York City so there are obviously MANY flights to Italy and Milan. My July tix are $750 each. The last week of August was showing up at $450 earlier this week, tho it had a one hour stop in London versus nonstop in July.

And I know many people said there isn't a big difference between end of August and early July but it seems some of the hotels I was looking at in the lakes, at least, were booked in August but not early July. Might just be at the lakes but that's what I'm finding.

I haven't booked any hotels or accomodations yet which is why I could change it tho I think the window has passed and now I would be charged a penalty.
