Italy destination between Naples & Rome

Where is a good place to visit, btwn Naples & Rome but not a super crowded atmosphere at high season in July? Looking for place to stay 2 nights with friends in a city on way to Rome. Have some good nightlife & cultural experience.

The best place to stay in Naples is Sorrento. Seriously. I know it's not between Naples and Rome, but it's easily accessed from Naples. I strongly recommend against staying in Naples unless you're really into what's euphemistically referred to as "gritty". We found it to be much closer to a Third World city and hard to appreciate. (We stayed there 3 nights to save money, and regretted it every day.) That said, there are some tourists who really enjoy Naples. I think it's safe to say they're in the minority. It just goes to show that there's no one size fits all when it comes to travel.

There's nothing that fits your description. Sorry. Why not just go on into Rome?

We're already doing Rome on the way in... and Naples sounds so crowded and unpleasant. A good wine tasting place or something would suffice!?! Ever know anyone that's been to the hilltop farm/lodging La Ginestra?

Nothing really stands out; I think so many people catch the fast train and skip over that section of the country. If I were planning this, I would start with a map, maybe scope out a few likely stops, then research. You might check a more comprehensive guide like Lonely Planet, they would list at least the basics for any number of towns in the region. In July, the beaches may be crowded, but two likely candidates for me would be Terracina and Formia. Both Beach towns, so in the summer there should be plenty of night life, and probably a noticable lack of Americans and Sightseeing Tourists, adding a bit to the cultural aspect. You could try and pick a few spots inland and do a similar investigation, maybe less crowded.

Before I realized you had double posted the question I answered the other one. I've deleted my answer from there. What I had said was, That's a tough one because they are only 2 hours apart and much of that will be on the GRA and on the way out of Napoli. Montecassino? I wouldn't have thought there was much nightlife but there is food and it exudes WWII history. Please only post questions once. Thanks.
