Italy December 22 - January 2

My husband and I will be travelling to Italy over Christmas and New Years this year. We are planning to attend midnight mass at the Vatican, so we will start our trip in Rome. However, having been to Rome before, we don't plan on staying there too long and will have about 6 or so days to spend somewhere else.

We are considering Florence as we have never been there before, but would love other destination ideas for that time of the year.

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Many Italians head to Sorrento after Christmas, and also to the mountains, the Dolomites, for skiing. We've gone to the Dolomites for winter exploring and hiking. It is simply stunning there, but have also spent time in December in Sorrento and enjoyed the absence of crowds at Pompeii and Ercolano.

On the other hand, if the weather is poor, the museums of Firenze are wonderful.

There's No place like Napoli at Christmastime. The Mercatini streets take on a festivity with good down-home street-wise charm. Full of heavenly aromas, they roast chestnuts in the night under a propped-up spotlight. Napoli is legend for its handmade creche figures and scenes, sold on the street and set up in churches, a handmade sign pointing the way. Great Fun!
