Italy

planing a 21 day trip April/May. Fly in and out of rome, want to see Rome, Venice Florence, cinque terre,naples.sorrento/almfi coast, pompeii, and rome. Plan to use train, which way is best to lesson travel time. Also will we need reservations for all nights in advance, or can you find bargin rooms on route. Any other places we should see. Would love to go big city , small town, big city, etc.

I agree with Steve about arriving in one city and departing from another especially since you are covering a lot of ground. In fact, I haven't learned my lesson yet. We're flying into Rome, heading for Sorrento for four days, then back to Rome for four days. Should have flown into Naples and out of Rome. Darn it!

You're going to spend a lot of time driving aimlessly around in taxis at each destination if you don't have advance reservations at specific places.

Find lodging and make reservations in advance. Buy the RS books for recommendations on places to stay and a suggested itinerary for 21 days in Italy.
