Italy daily road tax?

My rental contract states that there is a daily road tax of 3.5E that is not covered by my rental fee. Where do I pay that? I have driven in Italy before, but the car was leased in either France of Germany and I don't remember paying a daily road tax. I did get caught in the Czech Republic without one of their stickers, but that's another story.

Mike,

In the vague recesses of my memory, I recall having to deal with that in the past. I suspect they'll just add the daily "road tax" charges to your bill. What their statement indicates is that this tax is not part of the fee for actually renting the car.

One other thing to note about driving in Italy is that an International Driver's Permit is compulsory. Foreign drivers can be fined on the spot for failing to produce one if requested. While the authorities may not always request one, I believe it's prudent to be prepared. The I.D.P. must be used in conjunction with your home driver's license. You can obtain these at very reasonable cost from any AAA office.

Happy travels!

Thanks Ken, your explanation makes sense. I picked up the IDP last week. The only time I have ever had to use one was in the Czech Republic and am very glad I had it. I love the area where you live, BC is an absolutely gorgeous place. I have only made it as far north and east as Hope, but hope to make farther sometime in the near future. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Mike,

You're very welcome! I also like the area you live, especially as I have family there (which reminds me, I should consider visiting them in the near future - there's an awesome Italian restaurant in Portland that is "beckoning me"!).

I have to admit I feel extremely fortunate to be living in an area that other people pay to visit on holidays. The Okanagan Valley is a very popular tourist area. In the summer, people come for golfing, hiking, water sports and also winery tours (we have about 100 Wineries in the valley). In the winter, it's skiing at Big White or Silver Star. A huge European "wellness centre" called Sparkling Hills will be opening in Spring 2010, so I imagine that will draw visitors as well. I believe the Swarovsky crystal firm is involved somewhere as there's a LOT of glass in the design! Check their website, it's quite impressive! I've been meaning to get up there to take some photos and have a look around. I'll try to do that soon.

Cheers!

Right, like Ken said, you'll probably see that as an additional charge on your bill.

But wow, it sounds like they are going totally nuts with the road tax! I'm sure their cars are newer than mine (a '97), and mine is only about 100E per year! It's supposed to be cheaper for newer vehicles!
