We will be driving to the outskirts of Venice from Denmark in July with 3 kids(5,8,17). We will be in our car with our camper behind us. Does anyone have advice?
*Traveling from Denmark to Italy with a camper? (Route recommendations? Traffic help/advice?)
*Stops on the way to break up the drive? (Germany/Czech Republic)
*Suggestions for kids ages 5 and 8(boys) and 17(girl)?
* Venice tips (when to go) (what to do) (with kids)
*Any other help??
Thanks,
Kelly
Kelly, since the bulk of your route is through Germany, I suggest that you make a separate post in the German forum to ask for routing suggestions. We have several people on the forum who are extremely knowledgeable about Germany--some even live in that country--and I'm sure they can give you some good ideas. ViaMichelin estimates pure driving time at over 16 hours, and it is considered optimistic. How many days are you planning to take for the drive?
Do mention your children in your new post, too.
We are hoping to drive straight down to Italy and spend 10 days there. We are flexible with dates, but we will be traveling in July.
My kids are typical. The boys need playgrounds and fun. Our 17 year daughter likes being in nature, warum weather and boys! ;) Our trip is centered around them, but I’m looking forward to Venice. I’ve never been there.
We once drove from Italy to Denmark and back and it was endless. I urge you to consider and plan the trip as a whole. Incorporate diversions, education, and relaxation for both adults and kids for the entire trip. Germany has interesting museums and villages and hikes available through the whole country. One can never predict what memories a trip will produce, so let the wheel of fortune spin.
PBS did a very good television series called “Travel With Kids.” I know some of their shows appear on YouTube, Amazon Prime and on their website. If you can find it, I highly recommend the show they did on Venice. It will give you great ideas for Venice. They have also done a number of episodes in Europe that I think you will like along with episodes from places all over the world. I hope you can find it. It will help make your Venice stay with your kids very special.
Since I have been driving from Denmark to Italy on motorbike and in car several times I feel competent to answer this :-)
1) Where in Denmark do you start? if in Jylland (Jutland) or Fyn (Fuen ?) take E45 via Hamburg. If from Sjælland (Zealand) take the ferry from Gedser to Rostock and drive via Berlin. Go via München (Munich) and Austria.
2) Stop whenever the kids need a toilet break or lunch. Stop for the night when you are too tired to drive. Start to look for a camping site about an hour before you get tired (Yes I know the future is hard to predict). Don't stop on a parking lot even if you have all you need in your camper. Also look at

3) No - sorry I have never gone that far with kids
4) Look for all the other Venice questions. I believe there are hundreds with lots of good advice. Also see http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/
Since you are taking three kids (sorry: two kids and a young lady) I will go against my usual advice and suggest you stay on Punta Sabbioni where there are some camping sites and you can take a ferry (http://muoversi.venezia.it/en) to Piazza San Marco.
Pro:
- I think your boys will appreciate a chance to swim
- There will be boys in all ages so your daughter can pick and choose.
- it will be cheaper than a hotel in Venice.
- You can prepare your own food when you want - both more relaxing and cheaper.
Con:
- You will spend about a hour each morning and each evening on the ferry
