Has anyone travelled through Italy with a small motorhome? Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks
chooch, Travel by Motorhome isn't a method I'd prefer for travel in Italy, so I've never really researched it. I suspect it would be quite costly, especially if full CDW is obtained. There may be greater risk of theft, as I'm sure thieves would be aware that all of the traveller's belongings are inside the Motorhome. Note that for driving in Italy, each driver must have the compulsory International Driver's Permit/, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. Hopefully someone here on the HelpLine will have more specific information.
Every once in awhile I see a motorhome. What I have seen are the smaller types. So far I've not seen anything like the big huge ones that are pretty common in the States. I've thought that that would be a great way to see Italy but even with the smaller ones I think it would be a big hassle driving around either in town (congestion, small streets, insane parking) and even in the country (even smaller streets). I really have no idea what would be required or if you could even rent one.
Chooch, one of my first thoughts when driving through Tuscany last year was how great it would be to do it in a motorhome! My husband thought I was crazy, but I think it sounds like a fantastic idea!! Discussions pop up every once in a while about this topic, so search this and other forums and you will find the information (I would start with slowtrav).
Again, I was thinking of a small motorhome, not the huge monsters you see over in North America. As I was driving around the south I too thought it might be a nice way to see the sights in a small motorhome. I did see a few when I was there, more like oversized mini vans! Don't have a clue how or where to rent one but it might be a topic of conversation!
Thanks everyone!

Any thoughts or advice on Italy by motorhome? Yes, 2 things that will be different from doing it in the US: 1) Auto fuel (petrol) in Italy is currently about $7.00 per gallon (after conversion to $'s per US gallon). And is expected to go up. 2) If you haven't driven in Italy, a heads up: roads (off the autostrada) are noticeably narrower than here. Especially in towns.
