Hi All! We are planning a trip to Italy from Dec 28 to Jan 10. We would like to avoid crowds, if at all possible. :) Based on the research I've done so far, we will likely be in Rome for 4 nights at the end of our trip (Jan 6 to Jan 9). Looking for advice on where to go from Dec 28-Jan 5. We are interested in architecture, art, antiquity, music, food, wine. We enjoy just walking and exploring. We would be interested in Florence, Sienna, Venice or Naples but I have been reading that these cities will have crowds rivaling those of summer during this time period. Wondering what others who have traveled during the winter holidays have experienced. Should we focus on smaller cities, for example? Open to ideas. Thank you!
Venice is magnificent and more so during the winter holidays. We like it in December although we have not been there that late in the month. At least there are not cruise ship crowds to contend with. You can also day trip to Padua, Verona, Vicenza, but there is nothing like staying in Venice, enjoying early morning and evening hours, and getting away from Piazza San Marco.
If you can find a copy (library, online used book store) there is an out-of-print book called “24 Great Walks in Venice” that could inspire exploration. We’ve used our copy many times to wander in less-explored neighborhoods.
Hi! Thank you for your advice on Venice in winter - especially the book recommendation.
Yes, thanks for suggesting that book – – its available through my local library network.
