Italy Best Driving Route: Pescara (Le Marche region) to Sorrento

I've been studying Google Maps and have found a couple of ways to get from the Le Marche region in Italy to Sorrento. The most logical route seems to be across Italy to Rome on the A24 then down the boot to Sorrento on the A1 (a little over 5 hours). But would anyone have another recommendation that wouldn't take too much more time? I'm a confident driver, and have driven in Italy before, but I've never been south of Rome. Thank you!

We did almost the same route a couple years ago but from further north in Cesena. Good route, little white knuckle in the Naples area but not too bad. From Pescara would think about 4 hours unless you hit heavy traffic......and depending on how fast you drive.

There is an alternative if you want to "escape" a bit from the highway driving. It will increase your actual driving time
by around 40 minutes, but it is a cool route. Take A14 south (direction Taranto), exit @ Val di Sangro, direction Castel del Sangro. There, take SS17 to Isernia. Between Forli del Sangro and Isernia, the route divides in two (SS17var, a new modern bypass with high viaducts; and the "old' SS17 through the mountains, you can choose the latter and add +10 minutes of driving time). In Isernia, take SS85 to Marzanello/Napoli, and re-join A1 at Caiarnello, following then your original route. It will save you some bucks in tolls as well.

Ron, You mention a "white knuckle" area going through Naples. Is there any way to avoid that? I am OK with most driving, but not high on cliffs where you are right next to the big drop. One of my drives is supposed to be Guilianova to Sorrento, but not if there are "white knuckle" areas. Can anyone advise? Thanks,
Ira

Hi Ira, I have returned from Italy and can report that the "white knuckle" driving for me was more about trying to find the right exit for Sorrento than the cliffs. As recommended, I took the A24 to A1, and had no problems. Approaching Naples the driving gets more intense (still no problems), but as I was alone, the exit was confusing. I'm still not sure how It did it, but I got there. The (in)famous cliffs you might have heard of are between Sorrento and Positano, which I experienced with an expert (not me) behind the wheel. If you're going to be hanging out in the area, and want to visit Positano without white knuckles, take the water taxi -- a lovely way to approach a lovely village. Have a great trip, and thanks again to everyone for your tips!
