Italy Beaches

Hi everyone! Next June 2012 we will be traveling with our 2 children, 19 & 23 yrs. We are interested in a day or two at a beach in between all the music, art & history of Italy. We plan on being in Venice, then flying to Palermo Sicily. Any recommendations?? Lido beach? Cefalu? Something near Palermo, Erice, or Agrigento? Thank you so much!

I have heard that some of the beaches at Lerici ( just south of Cinque terre ) are wonderful and sandy. We are spending 3 nights ther in June. Has anyone been there? Would love some feedback.

We were in Sicily July of 10, went to San Vito lo Capo and it was'nt too crowded yet. Beautiful area.

An hour north of Venice are the beaches of Caorle and Bibione. We just were there in June. Great sand beaches, not pebble. Very clear, calm warm water. Cute resort towns with an awesome shopping market that moves around to different towns each day. The market has some of the best shoes and purses around!

To Ron: Thank you! I was getting a little discouraged finding specific beaches on Sicily. I checked out the area that you mentioned, and I found several options. The sandy beach you went to sounds great. Was it fairly easy to drive to? Also, any thoughts on the other 2 beaches nearby: the one at Scopello, and the Castellammare del Golfo?

Prego. Haven't been to Scopello. Castellamare has a beach a little ways from centro. There is also a beach below the town center that you have to climb down alot of stairs to. Never went to either beach but just looking at the one below the center....it did'nt look very inviting. Plus the wall seemed to block alot of the sunlight (we were there mid morning). The drive to San Vito takes an hour, give or take, once you get off the autostrada. You drive along some narrow, very hilly roads for a ways and a couple of smaller towns. Once you get close to the area though it's really scenic.
Hope this helps out. Ron

Leslie, Erice's beach is actually a long ride down a winding road - Erice is at the top of a mountain. Spectacular! Cefalu has several beach areas and hotels right on the beach, so if this is your main focus, it would be very convenient, since Cefalu is smaller than Palermo or Agrigento. You could stay at the beach and walk into the town center for the stunning cathedral and other sights. Cefalu also has a huge outcrop of a mountain behind it, which you children might enjoy climbing (some ruins at the top). You might want to look at some satellite maps of the coast of Sicily to see what looks good to you.

Grazie! Are there decent beaches near Agrigento, or between there and Selinunte? In the guide books nothing is mentioned and the coast appears rather barren. Is this true?
