it is about a 5 minute walk around the counter

Actually, if you meant the entrance to the museums it's about a 15-20 minute walk. You must go all the way around the building to get there. Here is a map to show the route: http://www.saintpetersbasilica.org/Pics/Maps/Vatican-area-map.jpg You can see the arrow near the top left that indicates the museums entry. Donna
