italy 9 days

hello ... i posted a while back and now my husband and i are back to the planning ... we plan to arrive in rome on oct 11 early morning ... our original plan was to do the big 3 - rome/florence and venice ... now we are thinking of taking out venice to concentrate on rome and florence and surrounding areas ... thoughts? must-do day trips from either city? thanks.

I think cutting the geographical extent of the trip is a good plan. I don't think there are any "must-sees" that apply to every traveler. It all depends on what you like to see and do. A guide book will lay out a lot of the most convenient options for trips around Rome and Florence.

If you want to spend a night or two in a smaller place (though it's definitely not undiscovered), you might consider Orvieto. It has a number of worthwhile sights and a very pretty historic district. It's between Rome and Florence. But that's just one option. There are many others (Siena and Lucca among them).

I agree with above. Save Venice for the next trip, because when it comes to Italy everyone one returns.

What date would you be departing, and can you fly out of Florence?

yes, we will be flying out of florence. at first, we thought we'd home from milan because we were going to do venice ... milan is much less expensive.
