Italy

Hello, Fellow Travels!
We are traveling to Florence in early November.
We are seeking any advice on the best way to fly from Boston to Florence. It looks like there is no direct flights. Any tips and advice would be appreciated. Thank, Mark and Val. 😊🛫

Have you checked Rome and Pisa?
If you can fly direct to Rome, then it is a snap to get to Florence on the train--many would do that for a direct flight. If you would rather get where you are going, look for flights that have one plane change and try to avoid London and Paris airports.

Boston has a lot of transatlantic air service so you have some options.

You could check Delta via Paris (connecting to partner Air France, or using AF the entire way) or Amsterdam (connecting to partner KLM, or KLM the entire way), Swiss via Zurich, Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich, or ITA Airways via Rome.

Not all of those connections may run every day or in the winter but those are some options to research.

Are you only staying near Florence? If not, returning from a different airport could save you time and money.

Florence has a runway that is too short to handle wide body airplanes that fly across the Atlantic. Only Intra-European flights operate out of Florence.

If you want a non stop flight to Italy, Rome (FCO) is your only option, with Delta or ITA Airways (which are Sky Team partners). Then from Rome FCO station you can take a train to Florence (most require a change at Rome's main stations, called Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina). The overall train journey is approximately 2h 20m.

If you want to fly to Florence, then you have to fly to another European hub first. The best options to Florence are:
Via FRANKFURT or MUNICH (with Lufthansa, which is a United partner)
Via PARIS CDG (with Delta/Air France, both are partners).
Via AMSTERDAM (with Delta/KLM, both are partners)
Via ZURICH (with Swiss, which is part of the Lufthansa Group, therefore a United partner)

Florence has also flights from/to Lisbon (with TAP), Madrid (with Iberia), London Heathrow (with British Airways) however there is only one flight a day (and not necessarily every day of the week) to those destinations, therefore I don't recommend you fly via those cities. There are 3 daily flights from/to London, but only one to Heathrow. If you must fly to Heathrow, then you might consider Bologna, which is close to Florence (36 min by high speed train) but has 3 daily flights to Heathrow. Pisa has only one flight to Heathrow as well.
