We are traveling from Boston to Germany Dec 19th. Dec 29th we are meeting my MIL in Rome<she is flying in from the states>. What is the cheapest way to get to the Rom airport from Germany? Question 2: We are planning on renting a car at airport and traveling to Assisi. We are hoping to find a B&B in Assisi and explore the surrounding areas such as Tuscany, Venice and maybe Florence. Does anyone have a good tip on a B&B? On Jan 2nd we are returning to Rome, dropping off the rental and will explore Rome. We could use a tip on a B&B again there, prefer to stay near Trevi. We are leaving Italy Jan 5th.I know its a lot in a short time but we are prepared to walk a lot and see a lot :) Thanks for any feedback.
Best way to get to Rome airport from Germany is probably to fly on one of Europe's budget airlines. Just read carefully about 'extra' costs for baggage, obtaining a boarding pass, choosing a seat, etc. (Similar to Spirit Airline here in US.) I would also suggest, if you haven't already, to get Rick's Italy book to help with planning. Also get a good map to lay out your itinerary. When you do this you will see that Venice is probably too far to go in your short timeframe. Concentrate on Tuscany and Umbria. My first time to Florence we took a train from Montevarchi (near the villa where we were staying) and it was great. No worries about ZTL's or where to park. Rick's book will also give you suggestions on where to stay. I recommend you check TripAdvisor also. It would help if you could give us a budget you had in mind for accomodation and if you need two rooms, etc.
We need 1 room for 3 people and we prefer with breakfast. I have looked at budget flights they have quoted me 800$ ? If I fly all over Europe its cheaper. WE are not fancy people, just looking for authentic Italy. I can stay near Assisi at a Holiday Inn for 99 $ a night but this isn't very "Italy". Yes I will get his guide book. I realize Venice is far away but my MIL wants to go there.
You could train to Rome. B&B website: http://www.tuscanyaccommodation.com/tuscany-bed-and-breakfasts/?gclid=CPuvuOrzyrgCFeR_QgodsQcAMg Renting a car at FCO is easy as pie. Trevi is close to Assisi but a ways to FCO if you are tight on time for your flight consider something in Lazio, along the coast perhaps. Perhaps you meant to say Tivoli, that is near Rome.

In three weeks you can spend three or four nights each in Venice, Rome, and Forence, and still have time to see some other places. I would suggest Orvieto, Assisi (both in Umbria, next to Tuscany), and Siena. You could drive to most places as daytrips from Florence, but driving in Florence itself is a nightmare.
Don't do a 99 dollar Holiday Inn in Assisi. There are lots of good options. You mention wanting 'real' Italy. A couple of years ago I stayed at a very small home-based place, less than 2 blocks from the main square. It's Camere Annalisa Martini. I think I paid 25 Euro for a double room for one person in September. Very simple, a building in the back yard of a home that's many 100s of years old. Bathroom down the hall, but very clean and never encountered anyone. Furnishings like your grandmother's house. I think all the rooms are upstairs. They have about 6 rooms. No check in desk (just stop by their dining room to to find help). The grandmother didn't speak any English, but was very sweet and tried to feed me every time she saw me. The daughter, whose home it is, does speak English. I booked via the internet, using google translate.
