There are three of us, mother, daughter, granddaughter (72,52,22) and we want to stay in a convenient area. We want to be in a nice area, but don't want to break the bank. Would like to spend around 1000 for the 5 nights. Any suggestions are welcome. We are first time visitors and want to see all the major sights.
Thanks!
Take a look at Hotel Aberdeen. It is right next to the Ministry of Defense and is in a very safe location. It is also close to a metro station and the train station. I think other hotels might be in better locations for sightseeing, but I feel very strongly that this is a safe location and the hotel was very quiet and nice.
We've stayed all around Rome in various areas and hotels - but once we found the Hotel Napoleon in Roma we never ventured anywhere else. It's a family run (multi-generational) establishment with an impeccable high standard of customer care. Roberto Cioce is the Patriarch in charge of this wonderful place. Metro is literally right at the front door, the concierge will take unbelievably good care of you as will the rest of the family.
We absolutely love Hotel Lancelot on Via Capo d'Africa, have stayed there twice, easy walk to San Clemente, Colosseum, Roman Forum/Palatine Hill and close to a bus and metro stop that will get you almost anywhere. Owner Mrs. Khan and staff all speak excellent English and provide assistance with directions, booking tickets, etc. Wonderful breakfasts and we really enjoyed the evening dinners, you can choose these or not on a daily basis. Lancelot draws guests of many nationalities so sitting around the dinner tables meeting people from many different places was really fun and interesting. Not having to search for and walk to a restaurant was a big plus on heavy sightseeing days. Is recommended in RS books and also many other travel sources.
My new favorite in Roma is Hotel Fori Imperiali Cavalieri, family-owned, between the Colosseo and via Cavour. It's on a quiet back street. Bus to/from Termini is on via Cavour near the sign for the hotel.
Another vote for Hotel Aberdeen. It's safe, quiet, clean, and has a helpful staff. The breakfasts (included) are quite good, and the last time we stayed there (2014 or 2015) the off-season room rate was under €100 per night! We walked from there to all the major sites (except the Vatican,) but it's only a half a block to major bus lines, and about a block and a half from the Metro.
Part of the problems will be fining a triple - less availability than doubles for obvious reasons. Second last half of Dec tends to be a min peak time especially in Rome so $200 for a triple could be a little tight. Over the years and multi visits we prefer the Termini area and that includes the above recommended Aberdeen. Also in the same area, across from Opera House (easy to find on the map) is Hotel Sonya. We like the area south and west of Termini for its convenience to transit and local restaurants.
