In Rick's Rome 2011 Book, it states that you can purchase a Roma Pass for entry into certain museums and galleries AND get discounts up to 30% for other museums. IS there any way to book the Vatican Musueum online in advance and obtain the Roma Pass discount? It states not to purchase the Roma Pass in advance because you have to arrange to pick it up but I wonder if there's an ID number associated to get a discount online. Any info and direction would be appreciated. Thank you!
The Roma Pass is not discounted online. It costs the same as if you bought it in Rome. So just wait till you get here to purchase one as they are available in many locations. The Roma Pass IS NOT valid at the Vatican... The Vatican is a different country so it does not appy there. Read the link for more info on the Roma Pass - a good deal if you plan on visiting at least two covered sites AND using the transportation system.
We just left Rome and wished we had bought the Roma Pass. The transit system is easy to use and we would have used the value. Also the Colosseum lines were crazy! There was a very short line to get in if you already had a pass. The Colosseum was on strike the morning we arrived and didn't open until 12 instead of 8:30. You might want to check in to strikes there.
We bought a Roma pass from our hotel and I think we broke even cost-wise, but it was so convenient not to have to figure out all the ticket machines and to move to the head of the lines. Follow RS advice and do the expensive sites first to get the best savings.
We bought our Roma pass at the metro station near the Colosseum, posssibly a tabacchi shop. You can supposedly buy it at many tabacchi shops but we checked a couple on our way and they did not have them. It is certainly a good buy as you get in free to the first two museums or attractions and get a discount on others in addition to three free days of transportation. The transport pass is just so convenient. Don't worry about purchasing the pass in advance; just ask at your hotel and they can tell you the most convenient place for you to get it.
I don't know where you're staying in Rome, but we easily picked up our Roma Passes at a small TI right near Piazza Navona. We saw them at other TIs in Rome as well, so won't be hard to get them when in Rome. We treasured our Roma Passes as we avoided long lines! That alone was worth their weight in gold. You won't regret getting them.
For a full list of sites and locations that sell the romapass you can go to the website. Some of the smaller places might be sold out as they were unavailable online for just over a week and most people were going to the sites and TI's to get them. Donna
Definitely worth the cost, plus you get a pretty good map with it. The ability to bypass long lines is a major plus (there's a dedicated Roma Pass line for the Coliseum & the Forum) and if you plan on using the Metro & buses it's nice not to have to fumble with change or buy tickets elsewhere. We used ours at the Borghese Gallery as our first free site, and we ended up paying nothing even though when I reserved through their website it said there was some sort of reservation fee when you picked up your tickets - not sure if we just got lucky or that doesn't apply to all Roma Pass users.
