We just came back from our second trip to Europe. We are aging and would like to attempt a trip to Italy/France next year. I do all the itinerary with the help and support from this forum!!
I was thinking about landing in Venice for 3 days, then 3 days in Milan with a day trip to Lake Como, travel to Genoa for 2 days then on to Nice for 3 days, with a day trip to Cannes and leave from Nice back to the States. I give myself a year to plan and work out travel arrangements. This year we are hoping to have our 10 year old grand daughter (who has travelled much with us in the US). Any recommendations or thoughts? Thanks!
When you say days do you mean 4 nights or 3 nights? To me, I count 2 nights as giving 1 full day.
If you are taking the grand does that mean you will travel in summer? How are you with heat?
Genoa is an interesting choice. Was there a particular thing you want to see there? I might choose a smaller city for a different feel from Venice and Milan.
I would love to know what time of year you will travel.
Rather than 3 nights (I presume) in Milan, why not stay at Lake Como? Charming and beautiful, a contrast to your other cities.
Three locations in 10 or 11 nights is the fastest I would travel. We are of an age where we don’t like to move even that fast. I would skip Genoa in favor of more time on the French Riviera if travel times would support it.
Instead of 3 days in Milan with a day trip to Lake Como, consider the reverse. Or consider Stresa on Lake Maggiore instead of Como. From Lake Maggiore I would consider Turin instead of Genoa.
How many nights will you sleep in Europe?
Don’t expect to do much in Venice on arrival day. By the time you find your hotel and settle in most of your day will be gone. Do spend at least two nights there.
Logistics wise, it will be easier to sleep in Milan than on Lake Como which makes a great day trip. Allow a minimum of three nights there.
Genoa is the jumping off point for the Cinque Terre. If you aren’t going to the Cinque Terre than move on to France instead. With that said traveling from Milan to Nice requires a connection and till take over five hours. Are you sure you want to give up a day to travel from one location to another?
