Hi, I going to be spending 3 month in Italy, while I have to work I also going to be exploring and traveling day off and weekends. I will stay in Rome. Im looking to discover Italy and the most beautiful places. All in Train. Im looking for gems . If you please can share the places that you loved . Also I have 10 days off at the beginning (August 20 to 30 ) and I´m looking for place to spend it with my daughter. I was thinking going to Puglia coast towns, but then I have doubts ... (we love, food, shops, long walks, beaches , charming towns also big cities) we love it all that it's worth discover. again all in train. it's not our first time in Italy. Thank you
Do you have to stay in Rome for a particular reason? Are you able to spend a month in the Veneto and a month in Sicily for example?
Also, don't forget Ferragosto is the 15th. You may be leaving Rome for the Puglian coast along with 250,000 of your neighbors.
It sounds like a great opportunity.
I’ve stayed in 50 cities in Italy, and they’re all “gems” in their own way. Some of the close cities to Rome are Tivoli with the beautiful garden of Villa Este, Caserta with the Caserta Reggia palace (& great pizza in town), some of the Umbria cities aren’t too far for a weekend away - Assisi, Perugia, etc. Arezzo is nice, especially during their festivals & first Sunday of the month is an antique fair. Florence & Orvieto are close by train. And don’t miss Ostia Antica on the edge of Rome.
For your August time period, I would head to the northern lakes or the Dolomites for a nice variety to your experiences. The Puglia region is very nice & getting very popular so book anything very early.
Since you want places on the train line, it would be very useful to peruse the train map. I do this often, google something like “Rome, local train lines,” etc., to get ideas. The high speed lines will be much more obvious and easy to sort out. I’d get a Lazio guide book also.
It’s is always difficult to make suggestions for August, but if you are talking about this year, I suggest making your decisions quickly as bookings will be scarce. In fact, that could help make your decision for you if you just start searching.
Italy is wonderful, love it.
The big three are Rome, Florence and Venice. There is a high speed train that runs between these three cities.
All three are loaded with history, art and more.
While staying in Rome, you can do short trips to nearby places. Someone already mentioned Umbria, which is wonderful.
Recommend Orvieto, that is not far from Rome. A little farther are Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio and Spoleto. You can train to all these except Gubbio. Also, Tuscany (Florence is the capital), Siena, and more, see link:

South of Rome is the Naples area, and while a bit farther, should be looked into visiting Sorrento, Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. Also, a great museum in Naples.
Puglia is at the heel of the boot and some distance away. You could go there, but your travel time will be lengthy. Also, Sicily is nice, but also some distance and on an island. In the north Verona, Bologna, Ravenna (not far from Venice). Milan is great and next to Switzerland and wonderful lakes.
