Alot is dependent on how you like to travel ie. luxury, average, budget;time of yr, single lodging or other etc. I am a just abv hostel grp, dble occupany and must be disciplined, no alcoholic bev and modest eating. Coach class airfare and public transit or short term car rental but must travel during summer. so I research best fares on consolidator sites, reserve lodging in adv and so far I have been $100 a day or less w/o airfare.

Actually Rick addresses this very thoroughly in ETBD and his Italy book. The short answer -from memory--is @$185 per day is baseline.
Maybe give that section a quick read then feel free to come back with more questions. We'd love to help you but the answer varies for the reason Doug and others have stated.
