From Rome, train to Sorrento, back to Rome, train to CT, Florence and fly home from Venice. That's a big area to cover but doable. The longest trip will be Rome to CT (5-6 hours).

Actually we did Rome - Cinque Terre in under 4 hours, in case that helps! Not a huge difference from what the previous poster said but it was not a bad trip at all.

We have our plane tickets both ways from Rome airport. Would this change your suggestion?

What do you think about rome, venice, florence, cinque terre. maybe we have to leave out serrento.

How many days would you spend at each town/city?

A friend and I did a similar trip for two weeks. We flew into Rome and took the train that day to Milan, arrive around 4 pm. We took a tour in the morning, Milan was a last min idea so this way we got last supper tickets. That afternoon we took a train to Venice (3 days), then went to Florence (2 days) , CT (2 days) then Rome(5 days). We found we saw alot and this worked for us.

We did not make it to Naples.

Mary Jo,

With a time frame of only 14-days, I'd suggest dropping Sorrento this time and focusing on the other areas. Does the 14-days include your travel days?

Rome especially deserves 4-5 days, as there's lots to see. For the other locations, 3-days is good for Florence, 2-3 days for Venice and 2-3 days for the Cinque Terre. While the travel time is relatively short between all locations, you'll probably have to allow at least half a day for each leg (including getting to the Hotel, checking in/out, etc.).

I'd probably travel Rome - Cinque Terre - Florence - Venice - Rome. There's a direct train to La Spezia (CT) from Rome which takes about 4 hours. It's an easy trip from there to whichever village you'll be staying in.

Happy travels!

Mary Jo,

Especially for June, I'd suggest pre-booking your accommodations. That's "late" in the spring shoulder season, and I've found that Europe can be VERY BUSY at that time of year.

You could be lucky and find something in the Cinque Terre on short notice, but I'd rather have something pre-booked. Wandering around trying to find a place to sleep is a waste of valuable travel time! For example, I've watched other travellers in the C.T. trying to find a place to stay, and in one instance they got the LAST room in town after spending 3 hours+ searching EVERY location.

Cheers!

If you can change your air tickets, fly open jaw. From Venice to Rome is a long trip by train. You will lose almost a full day just getting back to Rome for your flight.

I agree that 14 days isn't enough for all your proposed destinations. Less is definitely more!

Thank you for all the valuable input! I'm traveling with my 22 yr old son (college grad trip we've been planning for years!) I hope he can keep up with me!

I think I have a plan! rome, venice, florence, cinque terre, rome.

Have you traveled (JUNE) and not booked hotels for each area? I am thinking of winging the last stop and hoping to get a room when we arrive in cinque terre leaving room for us to do whatever the last few days. I may do this our last night in florence just incase we want to explore a little longer

Hi Mary Jo - Did the trip your planning last year. We flew into Rome, stayed overnight and took the train to Venice the next morning for 3 days, took the train from Florence and from there did a day trip to Cinque Terre and then back to our hotel in Florence, an afternoon bus trip to a winery in Tuscany was absolutely wonderful, spent 3 days in Florence, took the train to Naples where a driver picked us up and took us to Positano, great hotel, the Savoia, from there its very easy to get around, from the beach you can take a boat to Capri for the day and the other days for under 4 euros round trip you can take a bus to Sorrento, Amalfi, Ravello, very easily. Everyone was very helpful with directions and it wasn't hard at all. Also ask your hotel if your staying in Positano about the restaurant at the top of the hill, for 35 euros, you will be picked up at your hotel to the restaurant where the food is absolutely delicious, wine, dessert and live entertainment and dancing and then taken back to your hotel, we really enjoyed it. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Rachelle
