If you're basically looking for the fastest route, this is not something you need to figure out for yourself. Just go to trenitalia.com, enter Salerno as your origin and your desired first stop in Sicily )or a nearby larger city if necessary) as your destination.

Then choose your travel date; if it's too far in the future, choose an earlier date falling on the same day of the week. Finally, change the time of day to the earliest departure time you'd be willing to accept. Trenitalua will list your options. Look at the total travel time, number of transfers (if any), departure time and arrival time for each routing. Especially if you'll be burdened with significant luggage or have mobility issues, you may want to check how much time is being allowed for any required transfers.

If you have any questions, come back here. Be sure to tell us your anticipated travel date.

Note that fares are likely to be lower if the ticket is purchased well in advance, but such tickets are date- and time-specific, so it's important to check the change/cancellation policy.

It will be a long trip by train; it's worth considering a flight or a ferry. I think there are ferries from Naples to Palermo, but I haven't verified that. There's a new airport near Salerno; perhaps it has flights to Sicily.
