Italotreno-Rome to Florence

Looking at the Italotreno site for another option from Roma Termini to Florence SMN. Will defintely take a fast train and have not bought tickets from Trentalia because I do not know how long it will take me to get from FCO Airport (customs. etc). My understanding is that Trentalia does not refund, but the Italotreno says this for a flex fare.
"Flex
You can make free of charge unlimited changes to your travel time/date and passenger’s name up to 3 minutes prior to departure time, for as many times you like.
If you cancel, you get a 80% refund. If you miss your train, you have 2 hours of “extra time” to find a seat on the next train asking to the in station Italo Staff or in Italo Ticket Office or calling Italo Assistenza at +39 06 89371892 (subject to availability)"

Has anyone used Italotreno and been able to make a change ?

Ann,

The ticket rules are basically the same for both train lines. From the Trenitalia web site regarding Base (non-discounted) tickets:

Before departure you can change your Base ticket free of charge and unlimited times; after departure, up to 1 hour, free of charge once at train ticket office at the departure station only. If you no longer intend to use the ticket and want to cancel the journey, you can request a refund before departure with a deduction charge of 20%. After departure refund is not allowed.

That being said, it really doesn't make sense to purchase a base (or flex) ticket in advance as there is no advance purchase discount. In your situation, I would purchase a full-priced ticket upon arrival.

You can also buy a base fare ticket at the FCO train station to include the Leonardo Express train to Termini and connect to Florence there. There are also a couple of direct trains from FCO to Florence, but it would just be luck if you arrived at their departure time, otherwise the regular route has frequent departures with the connection.

As Sam said, there are 2 direct high speed trains to Florence every day. They are run by Trenitalia and leave from FCO at 1108 and 15:08.

If you can't get on a direct one, just ask for a ticket to Florence at the airport station via Termini (14 € per person on the Leonardo Express train) or Tiburtina (8 € per person on the old FL1 train): no worries about fares, refunds, terms and conditions etc. etc.

Keep it simple, at least after a long flight when you are jet lagged, tired and confused by places you've never seen before.
