Italo High Speed Trains and Strikes

Specifically looking at the train strike on May 19th...

Needing to get from Rome to Florence that day...how can I determine whether or not Italo trains will be running? Does this strike only impact Trenitalia?

Any advice appreciated!

We have traveled in Europe for close to 50 years and only once been caught in a train strike. They are over rated and over discussed. If it happens there will be options but very close to the last thing I worry about.

Actually, strikes are more frequent these days than in the past, especially in Italy. We have traveled there 3 times since the pandemic, and on each trip, while we have not been personally affected, we have heard announcements about upcoming strikes while we have been waiting on the platform for our train. In several cases, we missed the strike by one day.

Italo is a private company. The May 19 strike says it is Trenitalia. They are not connected. The Italo trains may be more crowded as a consequence—-buy your tickets now.

I had a train strike that affected me in June 2022 in Italy. Fortunately they announced the day before as I was on the train heading to the festival in Pisa. Instead of reaching Spello the next day, I had to stay in Rome because the Regionale trains weren’t running past 9am. My original ticket was leaving Pisa at 9:05am! : ( So, yes, the strikes do affect travelers’ plans.

Look at this to see what will be running specifically for you. And, I would purchase that ticket time right now. Good luck!

I have to disagree.... even when we traveled here once or twice a year we frequently were impacted by strikes. Now that I live here for a part of the year it is worse. This year due to some work accidents the protests are taking the form of strikes in other sectors and this has resulted in some more strikes. So yes it is possible to be impacted if you are traveling outside of the protected hours. Have to see if it is buses, trains etc. Sometimes just specific trains/buses.... just Emilia Romagna for example...
