ItaliaRail question

I'm trying to make a reservation from Venice to Rome in July. When I put in one person travelling, I get an option of train # 595 (Intercity) with a second class rate of 28 euros. When I put in two people traveling, train # 595 at the same time is there, but that second class rate is not there, they just have the first class rate for 83 euros. I'm guessing I just get two single tickets for the 28 euros, if they are available? If so, what does that mean, does it just mean there weren't two seats together? This is my first time reserving something on ItaliaRail, or any rail in Europe for that matter. Anyone have any insight?

Use Trenitalia that Roberto mentions above. It's the offical italian railway website. I see fast trains every hour from Venice to Rome. Keep in mind buying tickets now for July you might not get the discounts of cheap super economy 29 and 40 euro prices. I did Friday July 12th and the trains between 10 and 14:00 are between 80 euro and 120 euro. However I clicked on a train at 11:35 and they had a 2 for 1 special. 2 2nd class tickets for 80 euro total (40 a piece when you divide it up). How long that lasts I don't know.

There are three InterCities, taking, in this case from before 3pm (remember - this nearly all-stopper train starts in Trieste and does not call at Ve Santa Lucia so you have to arrange to get from Santa Lucia to Mestre and change platforms - no lifts (elevators) at Mestre that I am familiar with - all stairs up and down) to 20:42 to reach Termini.

A Freccia or .Italo will fly along the rails and get there in only 3:33 or less with fares as low as €19 pp starting from Venice Santa Lucia. I'd check actual fares but you didn't provide your date of travel.

Thanks for the replies. I tried Trenitalia after I posted and had the same results. But I will use that site. I thought buying tickets well in advance was what I should be doing, but Robert, if you are saying to hold off and better fairs will come, I will do that. Do you mean just buy them once I'm in Italy? My apologies if this is posted elsewhere.

Sorry, my date of travel would be July 20. I was looking at the train that leaves at 15:14, #595. It appears the price has gone up since I posted.

Looking at Italo Treno (the super cool, super fast, very red coloured private company partly owned by the crowd that own Ferrari) for that day, Venezia Santa Lucia to Roma Tiburtina (4 Metro Line B stops from Termini) unchangeable non refundable 2nd class (very comfortable, free wifi and even a cinema car) tickets are €38 pp on the 12:55 (arr 16:55) and €50 pp on the 15:55 (arrive 19:30). The 15:55 is all out of the €38 tix, but for only €58 pp (8 more than the 2nd class) you can go Prima, a big step up.

Iggy - it's the opposite. As the cheap fares are bought up the prices will increase. Early on you can find some prices at 19euro then as they sell some it goes up to 29 euro etc. If you want to take the fast freccia trains I would buy those ahead of time to get the lowest rate.

It just so happens they have a 2x1 sale going on now.

Thanks to all of you for your information. Followed Nigel's lead, got the rate he mentioned on a high speed train. I would have botched it otherwise. Many thanks!
