Heading to Florence this week and I don't want to stick out. How to most women in Florence in their mid-30s dress and style themselves?
Look at this you tube video from 3 years ago and try to figure out which people are locals and which are tourists.
The short shorts in the youtube are not cutting it for the churches.
Honestly, I don't think it matters what you wear as long as it's appropriate for the sightseeing you'll be doing, and is comfortable. Clue: shoulders and knees must be covered in the churches. Women going to work or running errands will likely be dressed differently than someone who will be sightseeing and spending many hours on their feet. Anyway, no matter WHAT you wear, there are too many other clues that will give you away as a tourist. That's if they will even be looking at you, which they likely won't be. :O)
You will feel very comfortable in dresses and white sneakers. That seems to be what the majoriseem to wear. Forget blending in as a local. Why would you want to anyway?
Italians don’t care what you wear and will hardly look at you. Wear what is comfortable and be yourself.
As long as you are presentable, it doesn't matter what you wear. Clean comfortable clothes.
I felt 100% comfortable just wearing the clothes out of my closet which are just basics, neutral colors, modest and classic with comfortable shoes and a scarf. I wore jeans, White tee's, oversized sweaters, black booties, my only pop of color may have been my scarf. Minimalist jewelry. Basic makeup.
This resurfaced but an FYI: they are wearing the same as you are, maybe cut a little closer. Recently, we were with others from Italy, Spain, England, Middle East in a breakfast room in Barcelona three mornings in a row. It was impossible to peg any particular nationality aside from the food on their plate. Everyone had North Face, printed t-shirts, slacks, sundresses, sandals, unhemmed shorts. Men wore shorts. It's pretty global now.
I was eating out the other night in a nice restaurant and honestly my fellow Americans?!?-- you aren't eating at home on your sofa. I thought it was kinda odd to show up for dinner in flip-flops and tank tops at a nice restaurant (when the temperature was not hot). Of course, wear whatever you want we live in free countries (still)... but when we travel we are also ambassadors for the US. It would be nice if Americans wouldn't live up to our often bad reputation. And don't think the restaurant owner and staff weren't rolling their eyes-- happy to take your order and also to smirk.
