Italian train tickets

Hello fellow travelers,
My wife and I will be travelling to Italy soon and landing in Rome airport. we will be travelling by train from Rome to NAPLES. Then later from Naples to Cinque Terre then again from Cinque Terre to Lake Como before heading into Switzerland.
My question is do I need to pre book any of these Italian train tickets or are they tickets that I can just buy on the day of travel??

Any ideas or recommendations?

Look forward to hearing from someone.

Cheers

The point is that you benefit from discounts if you know you are traveling on a given day, like you are checking out of a hotel in Rome on a certain date and have a hotel booked in Naples for that night. You know you have to travel that date, so why not book it in advance and save money? Now if you were landing at Rome airport and going directly to Naples, I would not book that in advance. Those discount tickets are like airline tickets, make the train or forfeit the ticket. You can't predict if a flight will land on time or if there will be some unforeseen delay with luggage or immigration.

But for a route like Rome-Naples, there is a fast train almost every half hour at times, so there is no need to worry about not getting a seat, unless its a holiday weekend. It is all about saving money.

Thanks Sam,

That was exactly my concern for the Rome to Naples leg of trip. Don't know how long it would take to clear Rome Airport or get on the train from airport to train station or if plane would be on time etc so I might just buy that ticket on the day on arrival to Rome train station and pre-book all the others.

Thanks buddy

There would be no point in booking a ticket from the airport to Rome, as the price is always the same (14 EUR? Trenitalia website is down right now) and the trains go every 15 minutes and take 32 minutes to get to Termini.
