Is it safe to buy a train ticket on line directly from "Trenitalia"? It seems to be less expensive.

We did that and had no trouble at all. One thing I learned the first time was that there is a website that can appear to be the direct purchase site for Trenitalia if you aren't paying attention - Rail Europe.com. And it seems really user-friendly to a US traveler. In my opinion it is overpriced for the same thing you can get direct (a ticket!) and also has some fairly punishing change rules. Go direct to trenitalia and you will be fine.

Be sure to let your credit card company know before you buy those tickets, otherwise the charge might get denied.
