Italian Train strike this Friday, October 3.

We have tickets for a train between Napoli and Como. We were going to leave at 11:55. It now seems that there will be a strike and that this train will not be guaranteed. It seems that if we book a train before 9 am, we can travel. At least to Milano. Any suggestions? Should try to leave a day early. We are going on a river cruise. We want to be there October 3.

Does your cruise leave Oct 3?

I’d probably err on the side of leaving early. Even if you stay the night in Milano you could still get a taxi to Como if push came to shove and money was not a problem.

Your best option seems to be going a day early. Even if you leave Napoli before 9am on Oct 3rd by the time you get to Milano the next trains you need to take won't be running. And not only would it be a long haul by taxi from there to Como, the taxis are likely to have little availability since others will be trying the same thing.

The nationwide General Strike called by the COBAS Trade Union will OFFICIALLY affect Trenitalia, Italotreno and Trenord trains beginning October 2 at 9 pm through October 3 at 9pm.

Trenitalia is warning the strike may affect trains both before AND after those official 24 hours of the strike.

Trains that have not arrived at their destinations prior to 9pm on October 2 may stop en route— wherever they happen to be.

Trenitalia seems to be signaling they expect strike action to extend beyond these stated timeframes.

The best strategy is to be where you need to be before the evening of October 2 or plan to take an Itabus or private transfer to your destination.

Thanks everyone. We called Trenutalia and switched to a guaranteed train from Naples to Milano. After 9 pm in Milano we can take another train to Como. Cruise doesn’t really start until October 6. We will see how it works out. Terminals person was helpful and patient.

Last Monday the USB union called a general strike (not only transportation) to protest against the Gaza genocide and the support of Italian government to Israeli government. The USB strike had a very large support, so COBAS union are trying to ride this support with a new strike (this one); this very morning I heard a radio news service telling that if something big happens in Israel (think to the Italian/Spanish flotilla approaching the coast), they could go on strike immediately, at any time.

I know we should not be talking politics here, but if you really want to understand....

I was in the train strike of September 22. The train station was chaotic, there was a Gaza sit in going on inside the train station. We were fortunate to get the Leonardo up to the airport which was also chaotic. After we arrived at the airport we heard many of the Leonard trains were being cancelled or delayed. It was pretty stressful because we had a flight home early morning 23rd.

Well, we are on the train from Naples to Milano. We are then booked on a train to Lake Como that leaves after 9 pm. The train station was probably about normal. When we arrived in Naples on 9/25 there was a taxi strike, so we had to walk abut a mile to our hotel.

Just hope to get to our hotel tonight.
