I'm a very experienced European traveler, but somehow I've managed to thus far avoid Italy. Well, I'm in the very early stages of considering some R&R this winter, and I would like some suggestions for further research on Italian ski resorts. My wife is a non-skier, so it would help if there were plenty of other activities available. The only resort of which I'm aware is Cortina, but I would prefer something closer to the French border. Anyone out there in Ricknik-land have any suggestions?
I think the Dolomites---Val Gardena and Val Badia in particular---are wonderful, but I've never skied there, just hiked. However, they are totally geared up winter sports and the towns are quite nice.
However, if you want something close to France, try the Aosta Valley area. Ski resorts in the Aosta Valley include Plia, Courmayeur, La Thuile, and Cervinia.
The alpine events in the 2006 winter olympics in Torino were held in Cesana-San Sicario and Sestriere also closer to the French border.
