Italian riviera transportation

Hello,
We are going to Santa Margherita at the end of our vacation to relax for five days. Our plan is to go visit Cinque Terre, Portofino etc...
What is the best method of transportation to get to the different towns? Ferry, train or bus? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Sylvie,

To reach the five towns of the Cinque Terre, trains are the best method. The station in Santa Margherita Ligure is on the hill above the town so you'll either have to walk up the stairs or take a Cab from your hotel. Use the Trenitalia website to research times.

Visiting Portofino will be easiest by boat, as it only takes about 20 minutes. You could also hike if you're energetic. The staff at your hotel will be able to provide directions to the boat dock (it's not hard to find).

There is a city bus that goes from St. Margherita to Portofino (about 100-15 minutes) and the drive is very beautiful. As to CinqueTerre, we usually take the train but have also used the ferry, which gives you a beautiful view of the five lands. Also, if you are interested in Portovenere, you can get there by ferry (depending on the season) or by train plus a taxi ride from the train station. Portovenere is a very charming village and has been described as how Portofino looked before it became famous. Whatever you choose, it will be a wonderful experience.
