We end our tour in Nice after 1 1/2 days there. We are debating about a day trip to one of the towns along the Italian riviera before flying out. Would appreciate any comments on Ventimiglia, San Remo, Menton or any other locale that would be within 1 1/2 hours by train or bus. We'll be there in September.
Bordighera
Okay. Why does it have to be the Italian Riviera ?
Why not Eze ? We took the bus from Nice to Eze, totally enjoyed the town, and then hiked down from the hilltop.
We were not really impressed with Menton.
Eze for sure...such an awesome and unique town.
I much much prefer the French side, but asked about the other side.
Much as I love Italy that part has never much appealed to me.
I'd pick San Remo only because it has a market that is well renowned, and they used to send all the flowers to Vienna for the New Years Day concert. I've zipped past several times but never stopped.
Menton is in France, has a lot lemon groves and a lot of older residents. It also has a garden which was created by the same person as created Hidcote Manor Garden in England, although it not anywhere near similar or as impressive.
Ventimiglia has a nice enough walk from the station down to the sea, a small market, and a railway junction.
In that area I would pick Menton, which is on the France side of the border.
On the Italian side, maybe Sanremo. Don't care much about Ventimiglia, but that's just my opinion.
Stayed in Ventimiglia one night. It was OK, but we went to Menton on a day trip and would love to go back.
So, dfrench925, what do you think?
I like Villafrenche on the French side between Nice and Monaco
Ventimiglia and San Remo are a bit lackluster. Menton is interesting but still in France, though on the border. There is plenty to do on the French side.
