Italian Riveria/Anyone visit Livorno area/Porto Santo Stephano/or islands nearby

Going next year in July after several days in Florence.

I've been to French Riveria and considering several possibilities:
1. Italian Riveria, if yes, what's the best way to get there (looking at Liguria)
2. Heading west from Florence to Livorno or going south but not all the way to Amalfi coast, if yes, best way to get there (public transport) or some recommended towns to stop in as a romantic respite between Florence & Rome. I love history, the outdoors and great views.

3. What about some quick island trips? Is it worth it and where?
4. Ending trip in Rome. I know Rome will be hot but it is hot and humid or dry & hot? What are some quieter areas of Rome?

I'm an alumni of Rick Steve's Paris tour May 2011.

No place in Roma with a tourism base will be quiet in July, but there are some cool and shady green spaces (gardens, parks).

Roma: Hot and humid, not dry. Some nice breezes near the coast while you are in Liguria.
