italian restaurants

Is it the law in Italy that restaurants must post their menus, with prices, outside their establishments? We learned last year that this was so in both Germany and France and found the practice extremely useful.

I don't think so. We saw lots of restaurants that didn't post menus. Most did, but many did not. There was one in Verona that didn't even have menus at all. The waiter would run through the choices, and then you'd pick.

I thought it was the law but I don't remember where I heard/read it so it may not be the case. Yes, some smaller family run type places just don't have menus and read you the dishes that day, but I would say in my experience the waaaayyyy vast majority of places had menus posted outside. You should be fine. And yes, it is definitely very useful!

As others have noted, not law, at least not a National Law, but many cities have local ordinances related to treatment of tourists, Rome seems to have many, that it may very well be the case some places. Judging from the number of people I see stop and look (My wife is of the firm opinion that I cannot pass a menu by) a posted menu is good for the restaurant.
