We are considering taking a night train from Milan to Palermo. Has anyone done this? If so, what did you think?

Someone here reported that the tracks south of Naples were not great and that the train this swayed and rattled in a way that was not conducive to sleep.
This said, in the case of the train from Milan, this might not be an issue, because you would cover that part in daytime...
...which brings me to the fact that it is a long ride, basically a night + a whole morning and early afternoon. If I remember correctly, the train reaches Palermo around 3PM, not before.
All in all, if you have limited vacation time, I would fly. If timing constraints are lax, why not try...after all, with a 3PM arrival, at worst your hotel room will be available and you can nap if you need to.
And for a ride this long, I would only consider the sleepers (private for up to 3), not the couchette cars (shared).
