Italian music and singing in Florence or Rome

I was just reading my mother's journal from a trip to Rome she took in 1981. She talked of places to go where there was Italian music and singing. I'm sure there was wine involved as well.Do places like this still exist in Florence or Rome? Are they safe for a 55 year old women to go to alone?
