I am going to be backpacking through most of Italy and was wondering if anyone on this forum has stayed at any monasteries? How did you book your stay? How much did it cost? Good idea/Bad idea? Thanks.

John: You'll get much better search results using the Google method for searching the Helpline that's explained here Best Method for Searching the Helpline. The built-in search box in upper right of this webpage needs reprogramming, it only finds a fraction of what's in the Helpline Archives.

We used monasterystays.com and it worked great. Through my research, I found that it is difficult to make reservations with monasteries in general. Monasterystays.com basically is the middle man and checks to see if they have availability at the monasteries. They do all of the communication with the monastery and then relay that information to you. I recommend it.

You can also look into getting the book "The Guide to Lodging in Italy's Monasteries" by Eileen Barish. It has good references and suggestions, and it's something you can have on hand if you need it.
