We have a Magellan 4200 gps which we use in the U.S. Does anyone know what we have to do to load an italian map?

You might be out of luck. According to the Magellan site, all I could find were updates for North American maps, nothing about Europe. Maybe give them a call: Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST/PDT Telephone: 800 707 9971

Jerry, Mapping software is often quite expensive, so it may be worthwhile to simply buy a GPS unit with the European Maps already loaded. I've never seen just an Italian Map, so you'll probably have to buy the full Europe map software. There are LOTS of listings on Amazon starting at about $50 (factory refurbished). The top three brands are Garmin, Tom Tom and Magellan. Happy travels!
