Italian map app

We are renting a car for the Tuscany part of our trip.Does any one know of a app that will give us directions?? Or do I need to buy a separate GPs with Italian maps. Is it easy to find parking areas in the smaller towns?? Thanks, Julie

Myself, I've used a combination of paper maps (like Michelin Central Italy), maps in Rick's guidebooks and maybe a Michelin Green Guide, and Google Maps. Most of these have some parking info and I review that in advance as I plan the day's driving route. Parking lots usually are signed with a P, but what you might not know from signs is which one is closest to the sightseeing. In my recent experience driving to smaller towns, the ZTL (no-go zone in the historic center) is also well marked, if you're looking for it (see examples online).

Not so much for turn by turn directions, but I have had good luck just searching for off-line map apps for the area I am going to and using my smartphone. Some will also use your cell phone signal, locating off of towers, but not using minutes or data to approximate your location. Even google maps I have had luck with, doing searches and directions when I have a WiFi signal, then keeping the map up when I have no Wifi.

For a better option, look at getting Data service for your phone, maps do not use much data, so the value is good.

we buy michellin maps and also use an off line app. ( and a GPS) but the nice thing about italy and france is Michellin sell a range of maps that have great detail. they are generally yellow ( typically 1cm = 1.5 km) and show tourist info. they are readily available. and the names on the maps are the same as the sign posts. ( the 'orange' colored range of maps is a larger scale, not as much detail, so try and buy the yellow ones)
we use POCKET EARTH on our phone, is great as it can be used off-line. we haven't use it for giving directions though.
