Duolingo.com is a website that teaches languages for free, including Italian. I have been using it to brush up on my French, but my guy has been using it for Italian and loves it! All you need is a computer, headphones and a computer microphone. Buona Fortuna! (en Français= Bonne Chance!)

This one is from linguanaut.com
"What Does "gatto" Mean In English? Cosa significa "scusami" in inglese?"
Reminded me of the Monty Python skit where they translated the Hungarian phrase, 'Where is the train station?' to the English: 'Please fondle my buttocks."

Remember you may be getting what you're paying for on these free sites Here's another linguanaut pearl:

  • Go straight! then turn left/ right! = Vada dritto! e poi giri a destra/ sinistra!

(They got the directions reversed.)

I am not so sure about that, at least in my experience. No, I don't see people carrying on entire conversations in gesture language, but with the elders in my family, and with the old farmers I have known in Italy I see a lot of these gestures intermingled in conversations.

I also find many of these gestures have found common usage in the States.
